Dialects of Chinese

Do you know that in China, there are seven major groups of dialects of the Chinese language, which each have their own variations? Mandarin dialects are spoken by 71.5 percent of the population, followed by Wu (8.5 percent), Yue (also called Cantonese; 5 percent), Xiang (4.8 percent), Min (4.1 percent), Hakka (3.7 percent) and Gan (2.4 percent).

The official national language of China is Pŭtōnghuà, a type of Mandarin。However, every city has its own accent, including Beijing, the capital of China.

There is a popular Ranking of standard Mandarin:
1. Hebei, Beijing, Jilin, Heilongjiang(Standard without an accent)
2. Neimeng, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, Tianjin(With a bit accent but considered as quite standard)
3. Shandong, Henan, Liaoning, Shanxi(陕西), shanxi(山西), Ningxia, Xinjiang, Gansu (With a quite strong accent)
4. Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou (With a very strong accent)
5. Hunan, Fujian, Xizang, Qinghai (With very very strong accent)
6. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan (With very very very strong accent)

Personally, I think Hebei and Beijing should be put in No.2. So my Ranking would be:
1. Jilin, Heilongjiang(Standard)
2. Hebei, Beijing, Neimeng, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, Tianjin(With a bit accent but considered as quite standard)
3. Shandong, Henan, Liaoning, Shanxi(陕西), shanxi(山西), Ningxia, Xinjiang, Gansu (With strong accent)
4. Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou (With very strong accent)
5. Hunan, Fujian, Xizang, Qinhai (With very very strong accent)
6. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan (With very very very strong accent)

To be noted that, Mandarin without an accent is praised highly by the Chinese people and is considered as the most beautiful and elegant Chinese language. Some people might laugh at your accent, especially accents of Liaoning, and Hunan, etc. Lot’s of people even dislike the Beijing accent. So if you want to learn Mandarin without accent, you’d better go to Jilin(吉林)and Heilongjiang (黑龙江). Or find someone who can speak Mandarin without an obvious accent.

6. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan (极其浓重的口音)

6. Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan (极其浓重的口音)
